The funeral wreath is a classic flower arrangement used for thousands of years. The wreath has evolved over time to other shapes, such as crosses and hearts. All of these arrangements provide an impressive display of sympathy at funerals and burials. Wreathes are also commonly sent to the deceased's place of work, lodge or church.

.

Wreathes are usually fashioned as standing sprays, mounted on top of a tripod or easel, though casket spray versions are also popular. They are usually circular, consisting of blossoms of one or more colors, perhaps enclosed by an outer ring of greenery. Some wreathes are composed solely of evergreen leaves. Funeral wreathes have come to symbolize the everlasting circle of life, with no beginning and no end. When used as a casket spray, a wreath can lie on top of or at the foot of the coffin.

A floral cross is often used at Christian funerals. It is basically a wreath arranged in the shape of a cross. A cross is one of the most traditional symbols of faith and can bring a great deal of comfort to mourners. Typically, funeral crosses can include orchids, roses, asters, hydrangea, ivy and/or green hypericum. Many people like the look of an all-white cross – usually made up of white roses or chrysanthemums -- outlined with green foliage. Like wreathes, crosses can be standing sprays or casket sprays. Remember that casket sprays are not used for military funerals, as nothing is placed on top of a flag-draped casket.

Wreathes in the shape of a heart have become very popular. These can come in a variety of colors, though red, pink and white are the most common. One powerful arrangement is the "Broken Heart", consisting of a heart-shaped field of white chrysanthemums broken by a line of red roses and surrounded by greens. Another popular standing heart is the "Eternal Rest", composed of a variety of flowers in shades of lavender, pink, and purple: roses, poms, chrysanthemums, gladiolas and hydrangeas.

Standing arrangements are often accompanying by a written banner. For instance, the "Salute to a Patriot Standing Heart" consists of red roses, white lilies, and beautiful green foliage, graced with a banner inscribed with an armed forces motto – the US Marine variety reads "Semper Fidelis USMC".
